Job Opening

IDW is seeking a highly motivated in-house Copyeditor and Proofreader, this position supports the company in all aspects of copyediting and proofreading for comics and original graphic novels as well as all written marketing material copy such as monthly catalogs, newsletters,  and solicit copy. This role requires an advanced understanding of grammar rules, meticulous attention to detail, and above-average communication skills to work with a variety of writers and internal staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Reports to Managing Editor 
  • Maintain editorial policy and house style while also taking into account licensor style  preferences  
  • Copyedit full scripts and lettering layouts to ensure sense, continuity, quality of grammar,  spelling, and style, along with accuracy and consistency of text and art
  • Proofread final comic layouts and maintain accordance with style sheet and house style
  • Create style sheets for series, books, and licensors
  • Copyedit and/or proofread cover wraps and marketing materials including title  information copy, monthly previews catalog, presentation documents, and newsletters as  assigned 
  • Consistently revise internal house style guide to stay current with industry trends and  standards 
  • Check prices, barcodes, and other specifications against the internal company database
  • Other duties as needed 

Requirements

  • 3 – 5 years of copyediting and proofreading experience, with book publishing or comic publishing experience, preferred 
  • Expert-level understanding of grammar, style, and spelling  
  • Expert-level familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition) and Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th Edition) 

Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask   
  • Fact-checking research experience
  • Must have the ability to function under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects with flexibility as to specific needs 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Basic Mac skills, including Adobe Acrobat Pro, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, and  Microsoft Excel; experience with project management software, such as Asana, is a plus
  • Knowledge and passion in comics or pop culture preferred
