Mary Specter seems just like your typical angsty misunderstood teenager. She’s a bit anti-social, a bit sarcastic, and a bit shy. But what makes Mary so unique is her remarkable skillset: she is what they call a lucid dreamer. Since birth, her father – Professor Specter, a world-renowned sleep specialist– has trained her to be aware and alert to what she’s dreaming. She knows she’s in a dream. She’s conscious of what she’s experiencing, observes every detail, remembers everything long after waking, and often has the ability to exert control over the dream. She is Night Mary.
Ten years ago, Mary’s mother fell into a coma – and she hasn’t woken up. Her father has since worked tirelessly to find a way to awaken his wife. His expertise in sleep disorders leads him to believe that the only way to save her is to access her unconscious mind. Having once worked for a secret government program testing advanced telepathic technology, he eventually opens his own sleep disorder clinic to both study and diagnose various patients – and to continue his research on his wife’s condition. Combining Mary’s lucid dreaming skills with the advanced technology he has access to – he’s able to send Mary’s consciousness into the dreams of his wife and other patients. She walks among their twisted abstract nightmares, experiences their darkest fears, and is able to then describe – in detail – what she experiences.
But everything begins to backfire when she unwittingly steps into the dreams of a serial killer and consequently gets caught up in a world where dreams and reality aren’t easily – or safely- separated. Racing against the clock, she must discover what caused the sudden psychosis of their patient – and how to stop the bloodshed from continuing.
Nightmare On Elm Street meets Twin Peaks in Night Mary, a journey through the depths of our often nightmares, exploring what they mean – and what they are capable of.
